The University of Tokyo (well-known as UTokyo) was established in 1877 by the Meiji Government. It established as the first national University in Japan. The University aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.
The main campus of UTokyo is located in Hongo Bunkyo-ku,Tokyo and occupies about 56 hectares of the former Kaga Yashiki,the Tokyo estate of a major feudral lord. The UTokyo is composed of three campusess,they are Hongo,Komaba,and Kashiwa.
UTokyo has 10 Faculties : Law,Medicine,Engineering,Letters,Science,Agriculture,Economic,Art and Science,Education,Pharmaceutical Sciences
15 Graduate school : Humanities and Sociology,Education,Law and Politics,Economics,Art and Sciences,Sciences,Engineering,Agricultural and Life Sciences,Medicine,Pharmaceutical Sciences,Mathematical Sciences,Frontier Sciences,Information Science and Technology,Interdiciplinary information Studies,and Public Policy.
The University of Tokyo has
about 500 dormitory rooms available for international researchers and students.
UTokyo is currently planning to build large scale international guesthouses,
and is contemplating ways to minimize the concerns of housing for UTokyo’s
international community. Accommodation can be found in the following
dormitories which are open to international students: Mitaka International Hall
of Residence , Toshima International Hall of Residence, Komaba International
Lodge, Shirokanedai International Lodge. However, since there are not enough
rooms available as of now, many researchers and students from abroad must find
and live in off-campus housing. Those who live in rooms provided by UTokyo.UTokyo
will be asked to spare the facility to others by moving to off- campus housing
after a certain amount of time.
Students
carry out two annual festivals: 1. the Komaba Festival in November on the Komaba
Campus, organized and run by first and second-year undergraduates. 2. The May
Festival or 'Gogatsusai' on the Hongo Campus, organized by a committee drawn
from all undergraduate students at the university. Both of these Festivals open to the public.
