Stanford University is a private institution that was established in 1885 by Leland Stanford and his wife,Jane Stanford. They determined to establish this university after the death of their only child in 1884. They would like to use their wealth to do something for "other people's" children.
Stanford University located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. It opened its doors on October,1,1891. It has been dedicated to finding solutions to big challenges and to preparing students for leadership in a complex world. The Stanford first president was David Starr Jordan. In its first year,it had 555 students.
Stanford motto is "Die luft der freiheit weht" means ""The wind of freedom blows.
This great University has seven schools. They are Graduate School of Bussines,School of Earth,Energy and Environmental Science,Graduate School of Education,School of Engineering,School of Humanities and Science,Law School,School of Medicine.
Stanford Student Housing. Stanford is a residential teaching and research university. Roble Hall,built in 1981,is the oldest residence and still houses students. It is guaranteed for four years for entering freshmen.
Student Organization and Student Goverment. Stanford has 650 organized student groups. they had 44 recognized religious organizations and 88 commiteed to the arts. They also produce the newspaper called Stanford Daily. The Associated student of Stanford University is the goverment for Stanford students. Stanford also offers six cultural centers : Asian American Activities Center,Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano, LGBT Community Resource Center, The Markaz : Resurce Center for Engagement with the Cultures and Peoples of the Muslim World, Native American Cultural Center and Women's Community Center.
There are around 13,000 bikes an the Stanford Campus daily. Stanford has been called a Platinum-level "Bicycle Friendly University." Freshman may not bring cars to campus,but the free Marguerite bus service includes 79 buses in a 24-route system. Campus also hosts more than 65 Zipcars.
